Basel-Landschaft and Basel-City form the core of a far-reaching economic region Basel Area which extends beyond the North-West of Switzerland and into French Alsace, the South Baden area in Germany and the Zurich business hub. This places Basel-Landschaft at the heart of a vibrant economic region.

The tri-national Basel conurbation consists of 127 municipalities with some 780,000 inhabitants. The tri-national Basel metropolitan area has some 1.3 million inhabitants. Functionally, this region extends far beyond the North-West of Switzerland and into French Alsace, the South Baden area in Germany and the Zurich business hub. Some 66,000 workers commute daily from neighbouring France and Germany to North-Western Switzerland.

Basel-Landschaft and Basel-City set the heartbeat of the tri-national economic region. Basel-City is seamlessly connected to the northern part of the canton and together act as the region’s heart. Not only do they lend their name to the region, but they also generate a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of CHF 125,000 p.a. (the equivalent for Switzerland as a whole is CHF 77,000) and offer over 344,000 jobs, thereby setting the region’s heartbeat.
