Switzerland’s most innovative Region

The Basel Area around the city of Basel constitutes one of Switzerland’s most innovative regions. In a unique way the area combines academic research, industrial development and demand for leading-edge technologies in a fruitful, well-connected network.

The Basel Area is marked by companies who do intense research and development as well as industry clusters that reach across Switzerland and its borders. The labour market concentrates on qualified, high-performing professionals in a variety of intersecting industries. The area counts an increasing number of successful start-ups and spin-offs.

The cantonal government of Basel-Landschaft actively promotes innovation and works to ensure a productive cooperation between authorities, businesses, science and research institutions, companies and innovation transfer offices.

The cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Basel-City and Jura jointly finance BaselArea.swiss to promote innovation and investments.

The Canton of Basel-Landschaft contributes to the Polytronics development centre of Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique SA (CSEM) in Muttenz to further technology transfers from academic institutions to economic actors.

The Basel area is home to universities and institutions that lead in Life Sciences and correlated subjects. These include Basel University, the ETH Department of Biosystems and Engineering (D-BSSE), the FHNW School of Life Sciences in Muttenz and the Basel University Hospital.

Life Sciences Cluster Basel

With the “Initiative Life Sciences Cluster Basel”, conceived by the Basel Chamber of Commerce, several organizations have been pursuing the common objective of strengthening this life sciences hot spot since 2014.

The Area owes its attractiveness in part to its unique position at the Rhine Valley where the borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet, granting it access to all major transport routes and to the sea.  That said, the Basel Area has always drawn its success from its rich heritage as a trade hub and a hot spot for science and research.

The Life Sciences Cluster has a long tradition of diversity, which is partly due to its close links, short distances and the fact that its entire value chain is locally available.
